    Whenever I do tobi ukemi (from kotegaeshi), I end up with my body curled in a 90 degrees angle, I don't know how to end the fall in a straight line. Any tips?

    • @thomas.inauen
      @thomas.inauen 2 месяца назад

      Thank you for your question. Of course I would need to see your part to be able to judge it accurately. But the way you describe it, it sounds to me like you are falling sideways. And especially Kotegaeshi enhances this effect. Try falling with your head and upper body in a straight, vertical line from top to bottom. A bit like diving straight down in fron of you even though the hand is turned outwards. The direction of your gaze helps a lot with doing this. Try to look down onto the tatami and feel like your legs would travel straight over you. This way you should fall in a straighter line. 😄

    • @ingridkat86
      @ingridkat86 2 месяца назад

      @@thomas.inauen thanks so much for the reply 🎉 yes you're right, my legs don't go over my head and torso but sideways which doesn't create a straight fall on the tatami. I've seen quite a few aikido practicioners fall this way but I figured it doesn't hurt to try and learn the "straight" way since I'm still only 6 months into aikido, would rather learn it the right way.

    • @thomas.inauen
      @thomas.inauen 2 месяца назад

      @@ingridkat86 I also see it often, that aikido practicioners fall more sideways. I think it`s definitely worth it to learn to fall straight because it make the whole fall much more effortless. Just imagine you would to a front roll where you also drop down straight and not really turning sideways and then apply the same to the breakfall. And then I`m sure your breakfall will become much more straight and lighter. 😊

    Do you ever experience motion sickness? I recently started Aikido, and I keep getting dizzy and nauseous after rolls.

    • @thomas.inauen
      @thomas.inauen 2 месяца назад

      Hi Jeremy. Yes, in the beginning, when I started with Aikido, I had that a bit too, but now it only happens when I really overdo it. I think in my case, tricking with the flipping also helped to get the body used to it. In our dojo I had some visitors who suffered from motion sickness as well and they only did as many rolls as they could without getting dizzy. And it slowly got better for them. :-)

    • @jeremyt6408
      @jeremyt6408 2 месяца назад

      @@thomas.inauen , thank you. Do you know of anything that will help, besides taking it slow and not doing more rolls than you're comfortable with?

    • @thomas.inauen
      @thomas.inauen 2 месяца назад

      @@jeremyt6408 That`s a good question. 😅 I think I would try to pay attention to the direction of your gaze. Motion sickness occurs when your body receives conflicting messages from the parts of your body that perceive movement, such as your eyes. For example, in my rolling I usually focus on a point on the ground in front of me and look at it for as long as I can while rolling. Of course, at some point it won't work anymore and I have to switch gaze. But I think it could help to keep your eyes on a fixed point for as long as possible.

    Aikido the art of falling in such a way as to make your partner believe they are the one throwing you down.

    • @thomas.inauen
      @thomas.inauen 7 месяцев назад

      Well, they do throw you down. The work of uke is to hold the connection and to give just enough resistance for the tori to practice and still be flexible and dynamic. I understand that from an outside perspective it might seem like the uke is rolling by itself but in a good practice this shouldn`t be the case.

      If you resist you risk being seriously hurt but if you don’t mind injury when merely practicing techniques then you must be wealthy enough to casually walk into a hospital “hey guys I’m back 😄”. Lastly every martial art has compliance drills and ways to practice safely with a partner, don’t pretend that your BJJ, MMA, and Muay Thai etc. don’t

    • @thomas.inauen

      @@thomas.inauen These TMA naysayers know full and well why "compliance drills" exist and that everything they criticize TMA for is found in allegedly "more effective" fighting styles. Jesse Enkamp, not sure if you know him, is a Karateka RUclipsr who's immensely knowledgeable about various topics and even said that shadowboxing, bag work, speed bag etc. are the same thing as doing kata and have the same goals in mind (the uneducated and heavily biased TMA naysayers don't even know there's techniques in kata, poomsae, etc. that's why analysis and applications of forms exist.
